Incarnation Season
Year B (Mark) 2009
Now through January 11, 2009
The songs we sing for the first two Sundays of Advent need to focus on Christ's coming as
King and Judge at the end of time rather than on his coming in the Incarnation. The Incarnation is the focus of the last two Sundays of Advent.
4th Advent
December 21, 2008
Among the traditional titles for Mary (used, for example, in the Litany of Loretto) are
"house of gold," "ark of the Covenant," and "gate of heaven"
titles drawn from the praises heaped on the Temple in Jerusalem.
This is the connection between today's first reading and the Gospel.

Christmas: Mass in the Night
December 24, 2008 -- 5:00, 7:30 and 11:00 pm
The midnight readings are among the most familiar texts of Jewish and Christian revelation
at least to a Christian audience. They focus our attention on the meaning of the birth of Jesus.
Today's liturgy should be full of the sound of familiar carols.
For the Masses at Midnight and at Dawn, choose carols that evoke the images of the Christmas story:
Bethlehem, manger, angels, shepherds.

Christmas: Mass at Dawn
December 25, 2008 -- 10:00 am
These texts challenge us to respond to the meaning of Jesus' birth by prayer, praise, and action.
Today's liturgy should be full of the sound of familiar carols. For the Masses at Midnight
and at Dawn, choose carols that evoke the images of the Christmas story:
Bethlehem, manger, angels, shepherds.

94 Psalm 97: The Lord is King (Mass at Dawn)

While it heralds the physical coming of the new day,
it also looks forward to the "day of the Lord"
as a day of hope, because "Christ is born for us."

Christmas: Mass during the Day
December 25, 2008 -- 10:00 am
The meaning of the birth of Jesus is a present reality. God's Word is at work in the world now.
Today's liturgy should be full of the sound of familiar carols. For the Mass during the Day,
look for hymns and songs that proclaim that Christ is born this day,
as the Word made flesh continues to dwell among us.

Mary, Mother of God
January 1, 2008
"Theotokos," translated as "God-bearer" or "Mother of God," is one of the most important
titles given to Mary. The title is also important in clarifying the church's belief
that Jesus did not simply "become" God; he was divine from his conception.
So this feast, which appears to be a feast of Mary, is actually a further clarification of the meaning of Christmas.
This day is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace.

Epiphany
January 6, 2008
A further reflection of the meaning of Christmas: Christ is the light and the savior
of the whole world. He came from the Jews and fulfilled Israel's hopes for
salvation from God. Buta point that was strongly contested in the early church
salvation is not limited to the Jews. It is for everyone.
